Hitting ’em high at The Record’s inaugural golf outing

Fun and funds collided on the golf course Saturday for the inaugural Record Open, a charity golf tournament to support The Record North Shore.

Groups of local-news supporters took to the tees to not only raise funds for The Record but to also compete for raffle and cash prizes Saturday, Aug. 7, at Chick Evans Golf Course in Morton Grove.

The scoring competition came down to the wire, with the final four holes deciding the victors.

In the end, the CoWorkers Wilmette group of Monica Thompson, Alex Thompson, Julia Goebel and Julie Saltzman won the day with a minus 13, two strokes better than runners up Michael Siehoff, Kristen Carr and Ryan Pryde.

The winning foursome was sponsored by CoWorkers, a shared office space in downtown Wilmette, and the group didn’t stop there. Goebel also won the women’s longest drive and closest to the pin competitions, while Alex Thompson won the men’s longest drive contest.

After the close finish, the supporters enjoyed a post-round meal courtesy of Pit & Tap, a new Texas-style barbecue restaurant in Wilmette that donated to the cause.

In the end, the inaugural Record Open raised more than $2,000 for The Record North Shore, a nonprofit local news site that launched less than a year ago to cover the northern suburbs of Chicago.

The Record believes that responsible and nonpartisan local news is vital to a community’s wellbeing and regularly producing that news is a public service. Most of The Record’s work is free for all to read. The Record relies on its readers to fund that work through donations and subscriptions.

Events like The Record Open allow The Record to sustain its mission while also furthering it through outreach to the community.
