News Briefs: Charity pickleball match gives back; Rise in West Nile Virus mosquitos; Adoptable kittens at Glencoe Village Hall

Longtime Winnetka residents Laura and Sid Glenn honored their late sister-in-law, Gillian Cooley Morrison, on July 17 by hosting a community fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

A group of family and friends gathered at the Northfield Park District for the event and raised about $2,000 for the charity.

“We are fairly new to playing pickleball, which is a sport growing in popularity even amongst younger age groups,” Laura wrote in an email to The Record North Shore. “We invited our friends that play pickle and also had a court of newbies to the game. Sid and I love to introduce people to pickleball. It’s free to play, very social, keeps you active and a whole lot of fun. We had a friend coach the newbies and rotated the other players.”

Afterward, the group gathered at the Glenns’ Winnetka home, where they toasted to Gillian, who passed away last October.

“We touched on the fact that all of us have relatives, friends and coworkers that have faced cancer,” she said. “We even had attendees that have survived cancer as well.”

West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes found in Glencoe, Northbrook

The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has reported an increase in mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus in the region.

Batches of mosquitoes collected on July 30 from NSMAD traps in Glencoe and Northbrook tested positive for West Nile virus in the lab this week on Aug. 4, according to the website.

This year, WNV-positive batches of mosquitoes have also been found in NSMAD traps in Evanston, Glenview, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka.

NSMAD recommends residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites.

The Cook County Health Department also announced this week that the first human case of West Nile virus — a man in his 80s — was identified, but did not specify in which community the patient lives.

Rescued kittens in Glencoe look for ‘purr-fect’ home

The Village of Glencoe recently rescued three 8-week-old kittens: two female and one male.
