News Briefs: New Trier Science Olympiad takes 12th in nation; Local library to expand hours, capacity; Music Institute raises $825K with gala
New Trier Science Olympiad finished 12th out of 60 teams at the virtual National Science Olympiad Tournament on May 22. Results were released on May 24.
Senior Eric Liu, junior Maryanne Xu and sophomores Charlotte Calkins, Annabel Ma, and Isaac Noel also earned national medals.

Based in Oakbrook Terrace, Science Olympiad is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1984 dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 STEM education, increasing interest and opportunity in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers, according to a press release from the high school.
Winnetka-Northfield Library loosens restrictions starting Monday
In response to the state of Illinois moving to A Bridge to Phase 5 stage, the Winnetka-Northfield Library District is making additional adjustments to its hours and services.
“We are happy to announce the following service enhancements will go into effect Monday, June 7,” a press release says.
Updated hours for both locations:
Winnetka Library
9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday
9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday
1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
Northfield Branch Library:
9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday
9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday
Closed Sunday
There will also be expanded capacity at both locations, including a maximum of 28 people at the Northfield Library and 132 people at the Winnetka Library. Curbside pickup will continue during all operating hours at both locations, per the release.

Music Institute of Chicago raises $825K at gala
The Music Institute of Chicago welcomed more than 450 viewers to its 90th Anniversary Virtual Gala last month.
Contributions totaled more than $825,000 from about 250 donors before and during the event, which was free to view, according to a press release.
Contributions during the event itself totaled $51,000, unlocking challenge grants from Sidley Austin LLP and the Edwardson Family Foundation, and viewers met and exceeded a late-breaking reach challenge from Music Institute parents Dan and Yoo Mi Hahn, the release adds.
Highlights of this evening included remarks from Maestro Zubin Mehta, who received the Dushkin Award presented by his brother, Zarin Mehta (1998 Dushkin awardee); Linda Theis Gantz and Wilbur “Bill” Gantz, who received the Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago from Honorary Gala Chairs Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols; and Music Institute faculty Nina Wallenberg and Daniel Wallenberg, who received the Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence.
The Music Institute of Chicago has a location in Winnetka at 300 Green Bay Road.
