Vaccine clinics at Regina, New Trier high schools quickly book, serve residents age 12 and older

More than 100 locals received their COVID-19 vaccine Thursday, May 13, at a vaccination clinic held at Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette.

Appointments were originally offered to Regina students and local residents aged 16 and over. But after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine received federal approval for younger recipients last week, doses were offered to adolescents ages 12 and over — and appointments booked in minutes, school officials told The Record. 

Approximately 120 people, including both current and incoming Regina students, were vaccinated at the clinic, which ran from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The clinic was the same week as a similar event at New Trier High School, where on Friday, May 14, residents as young as 12 could receive a COVID-19 vaccine. It also was fully booked.

“Nurse Marti Bartel was able to quickly mobilize a vaccination clinic for our students and neighbors in partnership with our wonderful neighborhood Jewel Osco Pharmacy,” said Elizabeth Schuster, Regina’s president. “We are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity to help bring us back to normalcy with the incredible collaboration of our staff, students and parents. Our community has never felt stronger and we are proud to be a part of the fabric of the North Shore.” 

Schuster said school officials are “so grateful for the resiliency and hard work” of staff, who didn’t skip a beat through this entire pandemic.”

She added that Regina is “coming off a great year” where students attended campus five days a week for the near entirety of the school year.
