Wilmette police arrest trio of suspects who allegedly broke into two suburban homes

Wilmette police officers apprehended three alleged burglars on Tuesday, Feb. 8, after they reportedly broke into a home in the 2900 block of Indianwood Road.

According to the Wilmette Police Department, detectives “recognized” a car that was reportedly used in ruse and residential burglaries in the northern suburbs.

After the arrest in Wilmette, all three individuals — Kevin Miller, 21, of Chicago; Sonny Miller, 20, of Chicago; and Vincent Ely, 18 of Highland, Ind. — also faced charges of residential burglary from the Gurnee Police Department for a reported burglary also on Tuesday, Feb. 8, according to Wilmette Cmdr. Michael Robinson.

Wilmette police reportedly responded to Indianwood Road at 1:55 p.m., when the driver of the car, later identified as Kevin Miller, drove into a Wilmette squad car, a WPD press release says.

Wilmette police say no officers were injured, and Miller was taken into custody.

The police arrested two other men — Sonny Miller, 20, of Chicago, and Vincent Ely, of Highland, Ind. — after a search of the neighborhood.

After the apprehension of Kevin Miller, the release says, police did an investigation of the home to reportedly find that two doors were forced open and a burglary had occurred.

Police say that footprints located inside the home matched sets of footprints found in the snow behind the home.

Wilmette police, with assistance from nearby police departments, set up a perimeter and conducted a search where officers followed shoe prints in the snow and “discarded burglary proceeds” to find the suspects, according to Robinson.

Police located Sonny Miller and Ely at 2:42 p.m. in the backyard of a home in the 2700 block of Orchard Lane — about a half-mile away and across Lake Avenue — and arrested them “without further incident,” according to the release.

Sonny Miller and Ely were charged by Wilmette PD with residential burglary, while Kevin Miller was charged with criminal damage to state-supported property.
