Winnetka consignment shop is now a permanent part of Hubbard Woods

More than half-a-dozen years after setting up shop in the Village of Winnetka, KMK Luxury Consignment officially has a new home. 

Winnetka village trustees approved the shop’s special-use permit application to occupy the space at 930 Green Bay Road during their Tuesday, Jan. 5 regular meeting. 

KMK Luxury Consignment had recently occupied the space for a couple months but was only allowed to do so as a “pop-up” shop, according to village documents. Village code currently allows a temporary use, such as a pop-up shop, to operate a space for up to 90 days; thus requiring the special-use approval from the council. 

The store previously operated out of the space at 561 Lincoln Ave. since 2014, per village documents. Owner Karen Kikos, a Wilmette resident, cited the store’s need for more space as the motivation to move. 

“As our popularity grew, the necessity for a larger space became apparent and we relocated to 930 Green Bay Road in Hubbard Woods,” she said in a letter sent to the village. “With our expanded space, we will continue to intake and sell high-end apparel as well as home decor. As a valued and respected retail business operation, we will uphold the same tradition in our new location.” 

The 2,100-square-foot space was most recently occupied by Robert Bryan Home until August of 2019, according to village documents. KMK Luxury Consignment will share the one-story commercial building with Alexandra Kaehler Design, which has been there since 2018. 

According to the proposal, the hours of operation in nonpandemic times will by 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, but during the pandemic the store will instead operate under the same hours Wednesday-Saturday. 

Winnetka’s Plan Commission considered a special-use application for a real estate office in June of 2020 and recommended denial of the request. The applicant, Engel & Volkers, withdrew its request following the commission’s denial, officials said. 

In December of 2020, the Commission approved KMK Luxury Consignment’s request with no conditions. 

Terri Dason, executive director of the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce, described  Kikos’ business as “fabulous.” 

“(Karen) is adding a nice amount of energy into the Hubbard Woods Design District,” she said.
