Tune in Saturday to watch Winnetka’s Peter Chatain race for gold in Paris
Break out your USA gear, because a New Trier graduate is racing for gold this weekend in the Summer Olympics in Paris.
Former Winnetka resident and 2018 New Trier graduate Peter Chatain is racing for gold in the men’s eight rowing finals on Saturday. The finals will take place live at 4:10 a.m. and can be streamed digitally via the NBC Olympics website or live on Peacock for subscribers.
Chatain and the men’s eight boat had an incredible performance during their heat on Monday, July 29, holding off the Netherlands to take first place by less than two seconds. Team USA has a strong chance of securing a medal at the finals on Saturday.
Chatain is not the only one representing New Trier at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Northfield’s Grace Joyce and Wilmette’s Maggie Shea are also competing in Paris. The Record recently reported on Joyce and Chatain clenching their first Olympic qualifications back in May.
Joyce is a fellow rower who graduated from New Trier in 2016. Earlier this week, she competed with the USA women’s quad sculls boat. The boat finished fourth in their heat and then fifth in the repechage heat to take ninth overall.
Shea, now a two-time Olympian and member of New Trier’s class of 2007, finished her last race on Friday. Shea is a member of the U.S. skiff boat, meaning she and her teammate have completed 12 races over four days.
This morning was the medal race, which the U.S. just narrowly qualified for by placing 10th in the opening series.
Watch Chatain make Trevians history on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 4:10 on the NBC Olympics website.
