Winnetka school leaders working remotely following fire at District 36 offices

A fire Monday night inside the Winnetka Public Schools district offices has displaced administrators for an indefinite period of time, according to school officials.

The fire reportedly was contained to one office; however, the water and smoke damage to that space was significant, said Josie Clark, the Village of Winnetka’s communications director.

District 36 Superintendent Dr. Kelly Tess messaged district families early Tuesday, reporting that no one was in the building at the time of the fire and district staff would be working remotely until the office was cleaned and safe for employees. Tess encouraged residents to reach out to staff members via email.

The message also indicated the district would share more information when it became available.

District Communications Director Kate Hughes said based on early details, the district does not believe any individual was at fault for the fire, and district staff completes an annual fire safety and prevention course.

“Most importantly, we are very thankful no one was harmed in the incident and appreciate the tremendous support provided by our local fire departments,” Hughes wrote in an email.

The District 36 administrative offices share facilities with Carleton Washburne School, the district’s junior high school. The cause of the fire is not yet known and is currently under investigation, Clark said.
