Our Mission
The Record is dedicated to producing credible, courageous, community-first journalism on a variety of platforms, including a daily website and weekly newsletters and podcasts. Our reporters are ingrained in their communities, allowing them to report stories that no one else can. Our goal is to build a reliable and sustainable community-news outlet that enables a better informed and engaged local populace and more educated and understanding future generation of news consumers.
Our Story
When 22nd Century Media ceased operation in March 2020, credible local news was ripped away from tens of thousands of suburban readers. Three of the company’s editors soon united with a common goal to restore responsible community reporting to Chicago’s suburbs, starting with the North Shore.
Joe Coughlin, Megan Bernard and Martin Carlino set out to create a news outlet that could produce the kind of journalism that informs and inspires a community, while relying on reader funding to subsist and eventually grow.
Our uninfluenced and nonpartisan coverage is The Record that readers can trust.
Integrity
The Record Community News Group is an independent media outlet that, in the interest of the public good, is in full control of the journalism and information it publishes. The Record further adheres to the standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News.
