Paying tribute on 9/11

New Trier area organizations and residents remembered on Monday, Sept. 11, the lives lost and the tragic events that took them away 22 years earlier.

They marked 9/11 in different ways. Winnetka community members again planted American flags on the Village Green in tribute to the 2,977 victims of the terrorist attacks in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania.

The flag planting began in 2007 with a New Trier High School student, Genevieve Nelson, and the responsibilities have been passed along and are currently with former Trustee Andrew Cripe and his family.

Loyola Academy undertakes a similar effort. Each year, the high school’s student council creates a display of American flags near the marquee sign at Lake and Laramie avenues. The display honors the tragedy’s victims, including Loyola alumnus Michael Lunden.

In Northfield, officials tolled the bell at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the town’s firehouse at 1800 Winnetka Road, the time equaling the moment when the south tower of the World Trade Center fell on Sept. 11, 2001.

Members of the Village Board were on hand to thank local first-responders for their service.

Am Shalom in Glencoe continued its 9/11 tradition with a remembrance ceremony that began at 7:46 a.m., the moment the first plane hit the north tower on that day.
