Conference tourney at New Trier is another step forward for girls wrestling
Girls wrestling recently has enjoyed many firsts in Illinois, and New Trier added to the total last weekend.
The high school hosted the first all-girls Central Suburban League wrestling tournament on Friday, Jan. 27, in Northfield.
The conference does not officially recognize the sport, as not every CSL school has a girls wrestling program, but Trevians coach Marc Tadelman thought it was the right time to get an event started.
“(The tournament) gave girls the chance to compete against girls in the conference and showcase the evolution of girls wrestling in the (Central Suburban League),” Tadelman told The Record via email.
The IHSA debuted a girls wrestling state series in 2022, and three Trevians competed in last season’s sectional. During the regular season, all-girls tournaments are scarce but growing. Otherwise, girl wrestlers travel with their male counterparts and compete when they can.
This year’s girls wrestling sectional will be held on Feb. 10 at Evanston High School.
Four Trevs (Elizabeth Duda, Jillian Giller, Serena Virani and Nina Aceves) were announced at the Jan. 27 CSL tournament, which included a parade of competitors and awards presentations.
Duda conquered her weight class to earn a conference championship, while Giller placed second and Aceves third in their respective divisions. Virani did not wrestle on Friday.
Highland Park entered two wrestlers, Clara Ugaz and Rose Butler, in the tournament, while a third, Brooklyn Henderson, could not compete because of an injury.
Ugaz placed second in her division.
Maine East won the team title, and Al Ghala Mariam Al Radi, of Niles West, was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.
