UPDATE: Son reportedly stabbed parents to death in Highland Park apartment
The Lake County Coroner’s Office announced on Thursday, Sept. 8, that Ronald Goldberg, 79, and Renee Goldberg, 74, were the homicide victims discovered by police on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
The coroner determined that the Goldbergs died from “multiple sharp-force injuries,” which can include surface or penetrating wounds from a sharp object.
According to officials, the victims’ son, Barry Goldberg, 45, was charged Wednesday with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the crimes, and, according to police, was inside the apartment unit when first responders found the bodies of Ronald and Renee Goldberg.
A judge in the 19th Circuit Court of Lake County set Barry Goldberg’s bond at $5 million on Thursday, Sept. 8, after hearing grisly details from the prosecution of the crimes.
Lake County State’s Attorney’s Lillian Lewis told the judge that Highland Park police were called to Albion Highland Park, an apartment complex at 1850 Green Bay Road, for a report of yelling and threatening language.
Upon arrival, police reportedly heard the words “don’t shoot” and noticed blood under the door before forcing entry into the apartment unit to find Ronald and Renee Goldberg lying dead in a pool of blood.
Lewis said officers immediately noticed stab wounds on the victims, as well as a large knife on the floor and the defendant, Barry Goldberg, covered in blood inside the unit. Barry Goldberg reportedly admitted to police that he killed his mother.
Barry Goldberg was also a resident of Albion Highland Park, but it is unclear if he resided in the same unit as his parents.
The defendant is scheduled to next appear before a judge at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 for a preliminary hearing.
