Western Amateur Championship returning to Glencoe
A prestigious national tournament widely regarded as one of the toughest challenges in amateur golf is headed to Glencoe this summer.
The Western Amateur Championship will be hosted July 28-Aug. 2 at Glencoe’s Skokie Country Club, Village Manager Phil Kiraly said during the board of trustees Thursday, April 17 meeting.
More than 150 players from across the world will take part in the near week-long tournament. Past tournament champions include golf legends Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus.
The tournament, which was first played in 1899, was last held in Glencoe in 2017.
“This event brings some of the brightest young golfers from across the world to our community,” Kiraly said.
Glencoe officials are not anticipating an overwhelming impact to the community during tournament week, per Kiraly. He added that the village is coordinating parking and traffic plans with Skokie Country Club.
“This is a pretty exciting event to have within our community,” Kiraly concluded.
A preview of the event and the course is posted on the Western Amateur’s website. It says that Skokie Country Club was one of the 11 founding members of the golf tournament and also hosted in 2010.
Skokie Country Club opened in 1904 and has hosted other prestigious golf tournaments, including the 1909 Western Open and 1922 U.S. Open, in its history.
