We’re Hiring: Full-time community reporter

The Record North Shore is excited to expand its editorial team and is searching for our next community news reporter to cover Highland Park and stories that impact North Shore communities.

The right candidate will report stories of meaning and value to local readers; that includes local government and business reporting, accountability and solutions journalism, event coverage, and feature and profile writing.

The Record believes in visible and accessible community journalism, and this full-time reporter will be ingrained in the community, building relationships with sources and contacts while regularly working stories and leads.

The reporter will be expected to file several stories a week, while also looking out for longer-term features and investigations to work on with The Record’s editor. Additionally, the reporter will participate in weekly editorial meetings; have responsibilities with weekly newsletters, digital publishing and social media; and work closely with the editor in chief on larger editorial decisions.

As a nonprofit newsroom, The Record hosts a series of events and programs in which the reporter is encouraged to participate.

The Record is a nonprofit and digital community newsroom that launched in 2020 to restore vital local reporting for the North Shore. We cover the five communities in New Trier Township and Highland Park. Join a growing organization that cares about its staff, its communities and impactful local news.

Qualifications

• Two years of reporting and newsroom experience are musts, including coverage of local government and government officials.

• Ability and willingness to take photos while in the community.

• Must be able to generate story ideas and listen and respond to readers and sources.

• Effective interpersonal and communications skills with an ability to maintain relationships with sources, readers and local officials, as well as appropriately respond to conflict and change.

• Ability to effectively multitask, balancing multiple stories, interviews and coverage of events each week.

• Appreciation and passion for the vital role local news plays in a community’s wellbeing.

Compensation and Details: $45,000-$50,000 annually (full-time) | 4- or 5-day work schedule (hours vary day to day) | Paid vacation and holidays | 401K program
