Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Trey Meyers, New Trier baseball

Trey Meyers is a senior first baseman for the Trevians. In the team’s first seven games, the Indiana University commit has a pair of home runs and 6 stolen bases.

1. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

I go with an energy drink. Usually I drink a Mountain Dew Kickstart, the yellow one. That’s kind of my superstition.

2. Why is Indiana a good fit for you?

The coaches were really personable, it’s close to home so my parents can come see me play, and I fell in love with the campus on my first visit.

3. What is your favorite thing to do off the field?

Hang out and spend quality time with family and friends. I’m moving away and won’t be able to see them as much and I think spending quality time together is important.

4. If you could try a new sport, what would it be?

I’d say hockey. You go to all the New Trier Green games and it’s always a blast. I can skate a little but not great.

5. Who is your favorite athlete?

Joe Burrow (QB — Cincinnati Bengals). I’m a big Bengals fan. Watching him every fall is really fun. Hopefully they can make the playoffs this year.

6. What is your top sports highlight so far?

Definitely going down state sophomore year. Hopefully it’s not a once-in-a-lifetime thing and we can get back this year. The atmosphere was so cool; there was so much energy around the games. It was a blast competing in those two games.

7. If you’re in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

I’d probably get Dots, that little gummy candy, and a dragonfruit Vitaminwater.

8. When did you choose baseball over the other sports (football, basketball)?

Probably when I got hurt last year playing football. That made the decision a lot easier. Baseball was already my favorite sport, but that solidified it.

9. What is something people don’t know about you?

I would say that I was born in Florida. I lived there for a couple years then moved up to Glencoe and been there since.

10. What can this team accomplish this season?

I think we can make a legit deep state run. We have a lot of really good pitchers, a lot of really good hitters. You get hot down the stretch and anything could happen. We can make a legit run. We definitely have the talent to pull that off this year.
