BOYS BASKETBALL
New Trier 77, Maine South 72
Christopher Kirkpatrick racked up 31 points in his return from injury to lead the Trevians to the playoff victory on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Park Ridge.
Kirkpatrick, a junior, notched his 1,000th high school point during the effort.
Loyola 69, Von Steuben 36
Luke Alvarez scored 26 points and Brendan Loftus grabbed 13 rebounds in the Ramblers’ playoff-opening victory on Wednesday, Feb. 26, in Wilmette.
Highland Park 57, Oak Park-River Forest 41
Simon Moschin tallied 32 points on Wednesday, Feb.26, to help the Giants advance to the regional championship.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Latin 46, Regina 38
The Panthers fell in the sectional semifinal on Tuesday, Feb. 25, ending their season at 18-11.
Jillian DeFranza (first team), Olivia Fraterrigo (first team), Anna O’Connor (second team) and Natalia Cerrado (second team) all earned All-Conference honors in the Independent School League, which Regina won with an undefeated league slate. DeFranza was the league’s player of the year.
BOYS SWIM AND DIVE
Niles North Sectional
Stuart Timmerman won the 50-yard freestyle (20.8 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (54.89) to lead New Trier to a sectional championship on Saturday, Feb. 22, in Skokie.
Other Trevian state qualifiers were: Teddy O’Donnell in the 200 IM (fourth; 1:54.74) and 100 butterfly (fourth, 50.02), Drennan Devaraj in the 50 free (fourth; 21.33), Jared Goldstein in the 100 butterfly (seventh, 50.98) and 500 free (sixth, 1:57.14), Charlie Sears in the 100 free (seventh, 47.49), Caden Carberry in the 100 free (eighth, 47.52), Everett Pumphrey in the 500 free (second, 4:43.47), and Knox Noble and Charlie Conniff in diving (fourth, fifth, respectively).
New Trier also qualified all three of its relays: 400 free (Sears, Carberry, O’Donnell, Nathan Kim; 3rd), 200 free (Devaraj, Kim, Timmerman, Filip Stolar; second) and 200 medley (Carberry, Timmerman, Goldstein, Devaraj; third).
Velizar Filipov won the 100 backstroke (49.05) for Loyola Academy, which placed second as a team.
Filipov also placed third in the 100 butterfly, while teammate Gus Koh finished second in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke. Other Rambler qualifiers were: Luke Friestedt in the 200 free (third, 1:43.98), Thomas Gardy in the 200 IM (fourth, 1:55.74), Luke Helm in the 50 free (seventh, 21.72), and Devon Bone in the 100 free (second, 46.43) and the 100 breaststroke (fourth, 56.89).
All three Ramblers relays are also off to state. The 200 medley (Filipov, Bone, Guh, Helm) finished first, as did the 400 free relay (Helm, Koh, Filipov, Bone), while the 200 free (Emiliano Murguia, Gardy, Friedstedt, Helm) placed sixth.
Libertyville Sectional
Andrew Blauer, a sophomore, won the 100-yard butterfly for Highland Park on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Blauer also qualified in the 100 backstroke (fourth, 57.99), as did fellow Giant Rylan Mills in the diving competition as Highland Park placed fifth as a team.
