Wilmette students prevail in Battle of the Books

About 80 students from four private elementary schools take part in the Battle of the Books on Wednesday at the Evanston Public Library.

Students from Saints Joseph-Francis Xavier School, of Wilmette, answered the most correct answers about the books and took home this year’s trophy. Also competing were Evanston’s Roycemore School, Chiaravalle Montessori and St. Athanasius School.

Starting in September, students in third, fourth and fifth grades were assigned to read 12 award-winning middle-grade books.

According to a message from Saints SFX, the Battle of the Books is “intended to foster a love of reading by introducing students to diverse selections of literature.”

“It makes kids want to read,” said Courtney Ivaska, librarian at Saints SFX. “It taps into their competitive nature and builds a fun culture.”
