Trevians girls get it done again at league meet, while 7 Giants advance to title matches

New Trier girls wrestlers made it two for two on Saturday, Jan. 25, winning the Central Suburban League championship for the second time in the event’s second year.

League champs Lola Bianco (110 pounds) and Jillian Giller (140) led the Trevians to the team championship in their home gym in Winnetka. Giller became a repeat champ, and Bianco (24-5) improved on her second-place finish a year ago by pinning all three of her opponents en route to the title.

Sunny Aitzemkour (100) and Isabella Castro (105) advanced to their bracket’s championship and each took home a second-place medal for New Trier, while Zmorah Izenstark (125) added a third-place result.

On the boys side, Trevians senior star Tagg Miller (157) added to his impressive resume with another CSL championship.

Miller moved to 34-3 on the season during the meet, which included a 17-1 technical fall in the title bout.

New Trier junior Matthew Miralles (126) secured a pin in the third-place match. Miralles added two other pins on the day en route to the bronze.

Junior Chase Mulvaney (138) and sophomore Will Weedon (150) each completed fourth-place performances for the Trevians.

7 conference finalists for Highland Park

Riley Moore (125) and Dorothy Perez (170) on the girls side and Daniel Derbedyenyev (215) on the boys took home CSL championships for Highland Park High School.

It is the second consecutive league title for Moore, a sophomore, who pinned her two opponents on Saturday. Perez also achieved two pins to take her bracket.

Dana Holt (155) and Lexi Rosenthal (190) added second-place finishes for the Giants.

Derbedyenyev topped Maine West’s Marcel Debski 4-3 in a dramatic championship match.

Highland park also got runnerup finishes from Alex Gudgeon (113) and Eli Moore (175).

Ramblers get two champs at CCLs

Loyola’s Kai Calcutt continued his impressive junior season at the Chicago Catholic League championships, earning a conference title and the title of most outstanding wrestler at the tournament.

Niko Odiotti (106) continued to make waves as a freshman, winning a CCL championship with three decisions.

The Ramblers also got a fifth-place finish from Danny Malan.
