Arrests made for retail theft and battery at local Jewel

Local authorities charged two men last week with robbing a local grocery store and battering two store employees, according to the Wilmette Police Department.

Following the report of a merchandise burglary on Dec. 31 at Jewel-Osco, 411 Green Bay Road, local police responded and eventually pulled over a vehicle believed to be involved in the crime in the 1600 block of Wilmette Avenue. Four individuals were taken into custody, including two who initially escaped and were apprehended thanks to an assisting K9 unit, said Wilmette Deputy Chief Landon Girard.

Two of the individuals were released and two were charged with the incident on Dec. 31. One of the individuals was also charged with a separate burglary at the same Jewel on Dec. 26, and one was charged with aggravated battery for allegedly striking two Jewel employees on Dec. 31.

Girard said the employees sustained minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.
