Girls Holiday Hoops: Ramblers defend home court, Trevs rise to 5th, Panthers get 3 Snowflake wins

Loyola Academy girls basketball seems to be enjoying hosting its own holiday tournament. In two years, the Ramblers have yet to lose.

In Year 2 of the Loyola Christmas Tournament, the hosts defended their 2023 championship with another perfect showing, capping a 4-0 tourney with a 51-39 victory against Lake Zurich on Saturday, Dec. 28.

Ramblers senior guard Aubrey Galvan was named the event’s MVP after averaging 17.8 points per game and recording 18 assists and 15 steals through the four games.

Loyola junior Marycait Mackie was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Ramblers’ road to the championship featured wins against Oak Park-River Forest (78-18, Dec. 23), Lincoln-Way West (74-19, Dec. 26) and Lockport (51-35, Dec. 27).

Loyola, the defending Class 4A champion, is now 13-2 and will next play Naperville Central on Jan. 6.

Trevians claim 5th at Dundee-Crown

Emerson Buck, a sophomore forward, scored 19 points to key New Trier’s 49-46 victory over Fenwick on Monday, Dec. 30, in the fifth-place game of the Komaromy Classic at Dundee-Crown High School.

Anna Rivera added 10 points and Lauren Baker 8, while Victoria Wainscott snagged 7 rebounds for the Trevians.

Rivera and Buck were named to the All-Tournament team for the Trevians, whose only loss in the tournament was to eventual champ Huntley.

New Trier topped Naperville Central 53-25 in the opener. Rivera led the way with 16 points and 4 assists, while Baker added 11 and Wainscott 10.

In the followup 48-32 loss to Huntley, Rivera led the Trevians with 10 points, while Malena Riefe and Buck snagged 7 rebounds apiece.

To advance to the fifth-place matchup, New Trier topped Lake Park 45-39 behind 19 points from Buck, who connected on 8 of her 13 field-goal attempts. Wainscott chipped in 11 points and Riefe 10 for the Trevs.

Regina goes 3-2 in Snowflake Shootout

Led by All-Tournament selections Jillian DeFranza and Olivia Fraterrigo, Regina Dominican wound up in third place with a 3-2 record in the Snowflake Shootout held throughout December at Regina in Wilmette.

The Panthers opened with a 50-17 victory over Niles North on Dec. 14 before dropping games to Leyden (47-41) and Waukegan (62-44) on Dec. 21 and 23, respectively.

Regina rebounded with victories against Walter Payton (59-16, Dec. 27) and Niles West (59-42, Dec. 28).

DeFranza, a junior, scored the third most points in the tournament with 68 through the five games, an average of 13.6 points a game. Fraterrigo, also a junior, had the fifth-most points with 64. Natalia Cerrado scored 33 points and Judy Fabianski 32 throughout the tournament for Regina.
