New Trier, Loyola boys golfers keep seasons alive at regional; A Trevian takes girls regional title

It’s on to the next for New Trier and Loyola Academy golfers, following successful results during regional play on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Glencoe Golf Club.

Trevians sophomore Liam Kelly, who won a conference championship in September, kept up his hot streak with a 2-over-par 74, good enough for a share of second place overall and to lead New Trier to a second-place team finish and a spot in the sectional tournament on Monday, Oct. 7, at Heritage Oaks Golf Club in Northbrook.

Kelly finished his day with birdies on both the 17th and 18th holes to complete his runner-up finish.

New Trier junior Elias Weidmanis’ 75 put him in a tie for sixth, and seniors Peter Conkey and Boden Rice carded a 78 and 79, respectively, to round out the Trevians’ scoring.

For Loyola Academy, senior Drew Southwell and junior Ben Riekse carded matching 74s to tie for second place, pacing the Ramblers to third overall and an automatic sectional berth.

Ramblers seniors Seamus Purcell (81) and Charlie Kasten (83) also were part of their team’s total of 312, which was six strokes behind runner-up New Trier and 11 back of regional champ Evanston.

Kits freshman Lester Low was the regional medalist with a 1-over 73 to highlight Evanston’s day.

In another 3A regional, Highland Park’s Cole Rosenbloom carded a 77 to tie for third and qualify for the sectional. The Giants placed fifth overall and missed the team cut; however, three other Highland Parkers — Evan Rubenstein, Judah Paul and Cooper Borstein, who all shot 86s — will compete in the sectional as individuals.

New Trier junior is girls regional champ

Grace Leber helped punch her team’s ticket to the sectional round when the Trevians junior carded an even-par 70 to top the field Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the IHSA Class 2A regional in Glenview.

Leber finished three strokes ahead of the field and recorded 14 pars and two birdies as part of her winning score.

The Trevians (311) placed third behind regional champ Stevenson (305) and runner-up Glenbrook North (309).

Kendall Humphries-Solis and Charlotte Giczewski each took a share of 10th place with their 79s, while Molly Tir was 13th with an 83.

Loyola Academy finished sixth as a team and missed the sectional cut; however, juniors Abbey Riekse and Macy Schultz scored well enough (87) to gain individual bids to the sectional tournament, set for Monday, Oct. 7, at Bonnie Dundee Golf Club in Barrington.

Senior Sadie Benjamin shot a 94 to lead Highland Park, which finished 10th as a team.

Raiders qualify for another sectional

Postseason success has become the standard for North Shore Country Day boys golf, and this year is off to a similar start.

The Raiders placed second in the Class 1A Harvest Christian Regional on Tuesday, Oct. 1, to advance to the sectional round.

Senior Nolan Darnieder’s 73 was the second-best score of the day. Senior Jonathan Wiggins was not too far behind with his 80, good enough for eighth place. Sophomore Aiden Darnieder (85) and senior Henry Potthoff (87) also scored for the Raiders.

North Shore will travel to Turtle Run Golf Club in Danville on Monday, Oct. 7, for the sectional tournament.
