North Shore remembers 9/11 with solemn ceremonies, displays

The bell was the only sound at 8:51 a.m. Wednesday at the Northfield Fire Station.

A couple dozen residents and Village workers and officials observed the tolling of the bell in silence, honoring the 2,977 who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Northfield tradition is one of few 9/11 remembrances in the North Shore and is championed by local leaders, specifically Deputy Fire Chief Tom Burke. The Northfield Village Board also features two firefighters, Charlie Orth and Tom Whittaker, both of whom were on hand Wednesday.

Down the street in Wilmette, Loyola Academy paid tribute to one of its own.

A wreath in honor of Michael P. Lunden, a 1982 LA graduate, was placed at the school’s marquee sign off Lake Avenue. Lunden died on Sept. 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center.

Along with photos of the wreath, Loyola Academy posted to Facebook: “We remember with a promise to #neverforget.”

Thousands of mini American flags were planted in the soil of the Village Green in Winnetka, in front of the town’s veterans memorial.

The flag planting is a collaborative effort completed on Sept. 10 and represents the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Glencoe’s Am Shalom, in partnership with Glencoe Public Safety, continued its 9/11 tradition with a public remembrance ceremony at 7:46 a.m., the moment the first plane hit the north tower on that day.
