New Trier bounces back, takes care of visiting Yorkville

A strong rushing attack powered New Trier football in Week 2 on Friday night in Northfield.

Senior running back Colten Berg scored two of the Trevians’ three touchdowns in a 24-8 victory, as New Trier bested Yorkville for the second straight season.

The win evens up New Trier’s record at 1-1 as the Trevians head on the road for a Week 3 visit to Prospect (0-2), a team that stunned New Trier with a fourth-quarter comeback in 2023.

On Friday, the Trevians opened the scoring early in the second quarter when quarterback Patrick Heneghan connected with fellow senior Ben Zieziula for a 12-yard touchdown.

Ryan Ambrosino’s 40-yard punt return set up New Trier’s next touchdown: a 6-yard run by Berg midway through the second quarter.

Senior kicker Niki Dugandzic converted a 24-yard field goal to give the Trevians a 17-0 lead at halftime.

Berg added his second score on a 4-yard run early in the second half.

Yorkville got on the board late in the third quarter with a 70-yard catch and run for a score, but New Trier held off the visitors the rest of the way.

Linebacker Stephen Vellon and defensive lineman Anthony Aguilar had second-half interceptions for the Trevians. Aguilar’s pick came off a deflection (Vellon) that was forced by the pressure of Jayden Salazar.

The Trevians will look to pick up their second win at Prospect starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, and a week later host Palatine before the conference schedule begins with Maine South in Week 5.
