40-plus local vendors take things outside in Winnetka-Northfield sidewalk sale this weekend
Another weekend of sales is here with Winnetka and Northfield’s sidewalk sale, which will run Friday and Saturday, July 19-20.
The sales will take place in the two major shopping districts in Winnetka and one in Northfield. Visitors will find vendors in Hubbard Woods and East and West Elm Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in Winnetka.
Northfield’s sidewalk sale will consist of only brick-and-mortar storefronts and will take place in the shopping area at the intersection of Happ Road and Orchard Lane. Sales there run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The annual event is presented by the Winnetka-Northfield-Glencoe Chamber of Commerce and has been in operation for well over 30 years, according to chamber events director Christie Baker. The events will host a combined 42 vendors, including brick-and-mortar favorites, outside vendors and child entrepreneurs.
Winnetka will also have music for shoppers to enjoy as they browse. On Friday, DJ Pizza Head will take over Hubbard Woods Park from 2-5 p.m. DJ Anthony is set to perform outside of Peet’s Coffee on Elm Street from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.
Sunny skies will welcome shoppers on Friday and Saturday, with highs of 78 degrees and 80 degrees, respectively. Baker hopes that the forecasted weather and good sales will draw in visitors to support local businesses.
Baker said that this year’s sidewalk sale is part of a larger chamber initiative called Shop the Shore, which encourages residents to support local business.
These sales benefit customers and businesses alike. According to Baker, the business can unload products while connecting with customers from across the area.
Complete Chiropractic and Rehab is one of many businesses that can attest to Baker’s sentiment. Robert Booker handles community relations for the business and shared that the office has taken part in the event for the past three or four years. He said the sidewalk sale helps connect them to the community and new clients, and they plan to offer free spinal screenings.
The sales continue on Elm Street, where The Book Stall plans to offer sales on books, stationery, cards and more. Poets will also be in the store writing personal poems for purchase.
Stephanie Hochschild, owner of The Book Stall, finds that after more than 10 years of participating, the sidewalk sale is a great way for the shop to unload inventory before the school year and connect with new visitors. She loves the fun, “bustling” environment it brings.
The Winnetka Thrift Shop will also be participating this year, offering sales on women’s and children’s clothes to help support their mission. All of the shop’s profits help go to the Counseling Center of the North Shore. Caroline Merrick works at the store and believes their involvement in sidewalk sale presents visitors with an opportunity to do good while shopping.
Canvasback is one of five businesses opening its doors for sales this weekend in Northfield. Owner Eilene Isaacs said that Canvasback is one of the oldest businesses involved. This year she is offering sales in an effort to welcome in those who are newer to needlepoint. Several canvases will be 50% off, and there will be $1 specials on books and yarn.
