Hot Trevians melt Ice in Vernon Hills title game

The Trevians 16U softball team won the Vernon Hills Stingers Candotti Memorial Classic Tournament played June 21-23.

The team — which feature New Trier, Loyola Academy and Glenbrook South high schoolers — won six games in a row, defeating the Vernon Hills Stingers twice in the tournament, as well as the Oak Park Falcons, Warren Wave and AB Fastpitch.

In the championship game, the Trevians, led by Loyola’s Paige Purcell and New Trier’s Addison Varca, downed the Northern Ice, 5-2.

Purcell started the game and allowed only two runs on sacrifice flies. Varca relieved in the third inning, going five scoreless innings, striking out two and scattering three hits.

Loyola’s Abby Murphy notched a two-run triple in the bottom of the first inning, giving the Trevians a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.

Lyla Andelin (2-3, 2 RBI) and Campbell Bach (1-3, RBI), both of New Trier, helped the Trevians seal the game in the fifth inning.

Trevians 16U is now 10-1 on the summer, following a championship game loss to the Tinley Park Rockers in June.

Trevians Fastpitch Executive Director Dana Dolinko credited years of work for the successful summer.

“We have been working with the core of this group since they were about 12 years old. We have always seen their potential and have pushed them to become better, stronger, and more confident ball players,” she said in an email. “It has been so exciting and fulfilling to watch it all come to fruition this summer. I know there is still more to come from this group the rest of this summer and into the future.”

The Trevians Fastpitch program provides competitive softball opportunities for girls between the ages of 8 and 18. The program focuses on 10U-12U players from the township, but is open to nonresidents as well.

The program currently boasts a college showcase team at 18U, one 16U team, two 14U teams, two 12U teams and three 10U teams. Tryouts for 12U-18U are in July and for 10U in August.
