High School Highlights: All New Trier relays — and plenty others — are headed to state; Trevs baseball outlasts Loyola as win streak hits 25

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
IHSA 3A Loyola Academy Sectional

Ben Crane won sectional titles in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 18.07 seconds) and 3,200 (9:08.72) to pace New Trier to a team championship on Thursday, May 16, in Wilmette.

Keoni Osborne placed first in the pole vault for the Trevians, who also won a title and set a school record in the 400-meter relay. Other New Trier state qualifiers were: Dylan Nemerovski (100, 11.0 seconds); Tucker Anglemyer (400, 2nd place, 49.6), Atticus Miller (1,600, 3rd, 4:23.26), Felix Hekster (3,200, 5th, 9:28.25), William Landwer (110 hurdles, 5th, 15.32 and 300 hurdles, 3rd, 40.63), Frank Youkhana (shot put, 9th, 15.57 meters) and members of the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Enoch Appaiah-Kupi led Loyola Academy to a third-place team finish after earning sectional titles in the long jump (6.75 meters) and triple jump (14.49). Nicholas Arogundade won the 300 hurdles (39.53) and placed second in the 110 hurdles (14.76), advancing to state in both events, Emmanuel Ofosu (100, 11.07) and Loyola’s 800 and 1,600 relays are also headed to state.

Russell Czerwinski won the high jump for Highland Park with a mark of 1.94 meters. Fellow Giant Lukaas Nales added a win in the 400 (49.53), while Barak Goldstein (800, 4th, 1:56.57) and the 800 and 1,600 relays also qualified for state for the Giants.

IHSA 1A Chicago Hope Sectional

Brian Smith won the 400-meter run for North Shore Country Day and helped the Raiders 1,600 relay (Owen Keyt, Aramis Thai-Garcia, Kaeden Ackley) finish first on Wednesday, May 15.

Thai-Garcia also qualified for state in the 800 by finishing in 2:02.66, while Keyt advanced in the 1,600 with a time of 4:32.89.

BASEBALL
New Trier 6, Loyola 5

Mason Bloom hit a triple and knocked in three runs as the Trevians survived the Ramblers on Thursday, May 15.

Evan Olesker chipped in three hits and two stolen bases for New Trier (28-3), which won its 25th game in a row.

New Trier 6, Glenbrook North 2

Noah Shapo struck out six Spartans in a complete-game victory for the Trevians on Wednesday, May 15.

Trey Meyers went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead New Trier’s offense as the Trevs (27-3, 16-0) capped a perfect Central Suburban South schedule.

Loyola 4, Timothy Christian 1

The Ramblers bested their nonconference foe on Wednesday, May 15, to improve to 16-15.

Highland Park 4, Maine East 2

Ben Lichtenfeld struck out six over 5 2/3 innings pitched for the Giants on Wednesday, May 15, in Des Plaines.

Shamar Wilson and David Finfer contributed an RBI apiece for Highland Park.

New Trier 12, Taft 0

Declan Spinner recorded two hits and three RBI and James Novakovic added two hits for the Trevians on Tuesday, May 14.

Max Kaplan struck out five in four innings of two-hit work for New Trier (26-3).

Highland Park 9, Maine East 1

Michael Pasquesi doubled and knocked in two runs as the Giants picked up a league win on Tuesday, May 14.

Kyle Flynn got the win by pitching five innings of no-run ball for Highland Park.

New Trier 6, Glenbrook North 3

Sam Nigro hit a two-run double as the Trevians (25-3) won the league matchup on Monday, May 13, and clinched the Central Suburban South title.

Wyatt Nelson pitched four innings and picked up the win for New Trier.

New Trier 12, Highland Park 3

Evan Olesker tallied three hits to lead the Trevs on senior day on Saturday, May 11.

Charlie Wanzenberger, Sam Nigro and Aidan Nolan knocked in two runs apiece for New Trier.

SOFTBALL
Loyola 15, New Trier 10

Emilia Bartholomew and Hunter Lewis hit home runs for the Ramblers in their rivalry win on Thursday, May 16, in Winnetka.

New Trier 7, Evanston 5

The Trevians held on against the Wildkits to get the league victory on Monday, May 13.

GIRLS SOCCER
New Trier 9, Senn 0 (1 half)

Quinn Brahm scored twice as the Trevians dominated their playoff opener on Wednesday, May 15 at Niles North.

Highland Park 3, Schaumburg 2

The Giants came back to capture a victory in the regional match Wednesday, May 15.

Regina 3, Cristo Rey 1

Miranda Thomas, Caroline Sullivan and Payton Olszewski scored a goal apiece in the Panthers’ regional-championship victory on Wednesday, May 15.

Taylor Richards scored twice as the Ramblers won their playoff opener on Tuesday, May 14.

North Shore Country Day 3, Rochelle Zell 0

Tommy Kalotis, Margaret Fitzerald and Reese Meyers all had goals for the Raiders, who won their first regional title since 2019 on Tuesday, May 14, in Deerfield.

Loyola 25-25, St. Ignatius 12-15

Ryan Rickspoone tallied 4 kills and Liam Uraba chipped in 3 blocks for the Ramblers (32-2) on Tuesday, May 14, as they clinched the Catholic League Blue championship.

BOYS WATER POLO
Lyons 10, New Trier 9 (OT)

Hank Woodman scored six times but the Trevians were ousted from the state finals in overtime Thursday, May 16, ending New Trier’s attempt at a third straight state title.
