‘Staged’ car crash leads to carjacking in Glencoe, police say

Charges are pending against an arrestee who reportedly participated in a carjacking in Glencoe on Thursday night.
Glencoe Deputy Police Chief Andrew Perley told The Record that following a car crash just before 8 p.m. in a residential area near Sunset Lane and Skokie Ridge Drive one motorist physically attacked the other and stole their vehicle. Perley said preliminary information indicates the crash was staged by four individuals who reportedly crashed their car into another vehicle in order to steal it.
The offending vehicle was carrying an 19-year-old driver and three juveniles and had fled the scene by the time police arrived.
Police quicly apprehended the 19-year-old and recovered the stolen vehicle in Niles, Perley said.
The alleged victim sustained minor injuries, said Perley, who said the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment on if more offenders were involved in the incident.
A release from Glencoe Public Safety says the incident was isolated and there is no threat to the public.
