Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Dylan Mayer, New Trier baseball

Dylan Mayer is a senior outfielder/pitcher for the Trevians. He will compete for Manhattan College next year.

1. Do you have any pre-game or pre-at-bat rituals?

I typically on my way to the game always listen to “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. As for an at-bat, I look at my bat and just take a deep breath.

2. Why is Manhattan right for me?

During my recruiting process, I went to go check it out the school in the fall and got to see a beautiful part of New York. My mom’s old roommate lives out there and I learned it was a good fit for me.

3. What is your favorite thing to do off the field?

Typically just hanging out with my family and dogs (Bo and Ellie) and sometimes play video games, play cards with friends.

4. What is your dream job?

I’d love to own a restaurant, like a pizza restaurant or a sub restaurant. I love the camaraderie and environment of certain restaurants that are family run.

5. If you could try another sport, what would it be?

I think I would have to go with hockey. I’ve never really played but I feel like hockey would be a good move. I’d like to try that and see what happens.

6. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

Ireland. I’ve been there before and it was an amazing experience. We went around Dublin a lot and it was beautiful, and all the Irish countryside.

7. Who is your favorite athlete?

Derrick Rose (NBA). I love to watch him play basketball and he’s always had a great mentality. He reminds me of my club pitching coach — very level-headed and laid back.

8. If you are in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

I’d definitely get some Dots and probably like an Arizona Ice Tea, Arnold Palmer or fruit punch. For chips, I’d get Doritos Cool Ranch.

9. What is something people don’t know about you?

I’m not terrible at skateboarding. . I can do a trick or two on a skateboard. I can Rip Stick and ride a long board.

10. What has this year been like and how can you finish strong?

This year I think we’re a ton closer. There’s a lot more chemistry. We always play for each other and there’s really strong support and hoping that drives us in the postseason. Hopefully the boys stay healthy and out of trouble and we keep in check that everybody is for everybody.
