High School Highlights: 2 Trevs, 4 Ramblers earn regional wrestling titles; NT girls bowling collects regional title
A summary of preps sports competition from area schools over the past week
WRESTLING
IHSA Class 3A Glenbrook South Regional
Jack Cummings (195 pounds) pinned his opponent and Ty Stringer (220) won a 16-9 decision to win regional regional championships for New Trier on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Walter Garrett (106), Wilson Wright (120) and Eli Polacek (138) all won their third-place matches to also advance to the sectional competition set for Saturday, Feb. 12, at Barrington High School.
Massey Odiotti (120), Patrick Zimmer (126), Cooper Wettig (160) and Quinn Herbert (182) claimed titles for Loyola Academy, which placed third with 158 points in the team scoring.
Kevin Tedeschi (132), Danny Herbert (145) and Mike Williams (195) all took third place to advance.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS
IHSA Mundelien Sectional
New Trier scored a 137.925 to finish fifth and short of the state qualifying marker on Tuesday, Feb. 8. It was unclear as of press time if any Trevians advanced to state competition as at-large competitors.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Loyola 43, Mount Camel 40
Connor Casper and Alex Engro sank two late free throws apiece to give the Ramblers (17-11, 7-5) a come-from-behind league win on Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Wilmette.
Johnny Daguinsin led with 19 points, while Casper added 9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals to help end Loyola’s six-game losing streak.
Latin 51, North Shore Country Day 43
The Raiders drop the Independent League matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
New Trier 51, Maine East 42
The Trevians picked up the conference crossover victory in the final game of the regular season Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Regina 48, Francis Parker 23
Maddie Witchger racked up 15 points while Tamia Quach added 14 in the Panthers’ victory Tuesday, Feb. 8, in Chicago.
New Trier 63, Libertyville 48
The host Trevs earned the nonconference win on Saturday, Feb. 5, in Northfield.
Evanston 51, New Trier 32
The Trevs final in the rivalry matchup Friday, Feb. 4, in Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Mother McAuley 36, Loyola 31
The Ramblers dropped just their third game of the season in the semifinals of the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference tournament on Friday, Feb. 4.
Loyola (25-3) bounced back to beat Trinity on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the third-place game, and Angelina Giordano and Morgan Van Horn were named All-GCAC.
Regina 51, De la Salle 40
Reganne French scored 22 points as the Panthers earned the win in GCAC consolation play Saturday, Feb. 5.
GIRLS BOWLING
IHSA New Trier Regional
Maya Morales totaled 1,107 pins (184.5 pins) to lead the Trevians to a regional championship on Saturday, Feb. 5, when they totaled a 5,302 team pinfall — about 400 more than the second-place finisher.
Shannon Burgert (1,090), Erika Truong (1,085) and Lilli McLaughlin (1,022) contributed big scores for New Trier.
Erin Collins, of Regina Dominican, tallied 950 pins to qualify for the sectional round as an individual.
CHEERLEADING
IHSA State Championships
New Trier scored an 88.07 to place 11th in the preliminary round Friday, Feb. 4, just 0.67 points away from advancing to Day 2 of the meet.
