Athlete of the Week: 10 questions with Jackson Munro, New Trier basketball

Jackson Munro is a senior forward for the Trevians. The 6-foot-8 Munro recently committed to play for the Dartmouth College next year.

1. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

The day of the game when I go to school — so we wear a warmup jumpsuit the day of games — I always wear my uniform underneath that for the entire day.

2. Why is Dartmouth a good for you?

Just academically, Dartmouth is world-class and it fits my personality in that sense, but also I loved the campus when I was there and hanging out the guys when I visited, and I loved the coaching staff. They haven’t been winning that much recently and I think the opportunity to have a chance to turn that around and be a part of a culture change is really cool.

3. What do you have to do with your game to make an impact on the college level?

I think the main thing will just be adding weight and getting stronger. All of the coaches I’ve talked to think I’m really skilled but always point out my body and I have to add weight to play in college given my position.

4. What would be your dream job?

Honestly, I love basketball. I would love to coach basketball. Specifically my dream job would be coaching at New Trier. So maybe (New Trier head coach Scott) Fricke can help me out with that at some point.

5. If you did play another sport, what would it be?

I think it would be tennis. I played a lot of tennis when i was younger. My mom’s side is really good at tennis. My aunt actually won a national championship in Florida playing tennis, so I always played when I was younger and was pretty good. I just didn’t enjoy it that much. … But now when I play for fun I enjoy it.

6. Do you have a favorite athlete?

Nikola Jokic (NBA). He’s a center for the Denver Nuggets. I just love watching him play. I think our games are really similar. It brings me a lot of joy watching him.

7. What is your favorite thing to do off the court?

Off the court, my favorite thing to do would be just reading or I also really enjoy building Legos. I have a lot of big Lego sets that I’ve done and for Christmas or my birthday I always ask for a big one of those.

8. If you’re in Walgreens with a couple bucks, what are you buying?

Probably a Gatorade protein bar and just a lemonade or something.

9. What is something people do not know about you?

Probably that I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I’ve read all the books and I love all the movies. When I was little, I would play the Harry Potter Lego video game. Now, I don’t really watch movies that much, and the only movies I’ll watch are the Harry Potter movies, Marvel movies and “Star Wars.”

10. What can this year’s Trevians accomplish?

I think honestly we can accomplish just about anything at all. We can win a state championship. We’re that talented. I think it will just come down to figuring out what we’re not good at and probably most of that is going to be on the defensive end and if we can just get our effort and intensity right on the defensive end of the ball, we have a good chance to beat anyone in the state and really make a deep run.
