Sailboat runs aground off Glencoe shoreline

Local authorities rescued two people from a 38-foot sailboat that had struck a rock formation on Saturday morning, Oct. 15.

Village of Glencoe Deputy Public Safety Chief Andrew Perley said responders freed the vessel in about an hour after it became stuck on the shoal near the 1200 block of Sheridan Road, which is on the northern end of Glencoe just south of Lake-Cook Road.

The two individuals on the sailboat were uninjured and elected to stay with the vessel after it was dislodged and anchored. The boat was damaged, but Perley did not know to what extent.

Perley said at that location, about 100 yards offshore, there are “rocks underneath the waterline” that are noted on navigational maps as a hazard.

“Boats aren’t supposed to go there,” he said.

Glencoe Public Safety deployed its inflatable motor boat, as did rescue units from Highland Park and Wilmette. Perley said the water was calm on Saturday.
